Celebrate History and Culture with Festivals in Bataan

In spite of the fact that Bataan is not as well-known as islands like Boracay and Palawan, you should still check it out.

Bataan, in fact, is brimming with scenic beauty because of its abundance of beautiful beaches, towering mountains, and gushing waterfalls. Bataan has been more popular as an eco-tourism destination because of the work of local tourists and government departments to protect the island's natural nature.

But in addition to its huddled wonderful natural sceneries, the Province of Bataan is also gorged with various festivals that you can witness and join in. We compiled a list of their festivals below:

Kuraldal Festival (Dinalupihan)

As a way to cool off from the late summer heat, the town hosts a weeklong celebration and series of events known as the town fiesta, which features a civic-military parade, cultural performances of songs, colorful costumes, and street dancing from almost every sector of the community.

During the feast day of St. John the Baptist, the town's patron saint, a short presentation is shown to the crowd recalling the act, and then everyone in town joyfully participates in the Kuraldal, a dance-around parade with floral dresses and hats, flowers and leaves swayed and waved in merriment, while onlookers splash them all with water, resembling how Jesus was baptized with water on the river of Jordan.

When is it celebrated: This festival is celebrated on the 24th day of June every year.

Pawikan Festival (Morong and Bagac)

The Bantay Pawikan, Inc. and the Morong local government unit have been hosting the annual Pawikan Festival. The Bataan Tourism Council Foundation, Inc., in conjunction with the Provincial Government and the Provincial Tourism Office, has been running a series of events over the course of many years to raise money and public awareness for the conservation center's ongoing upkeep and expansion. They also make costal clean up project for the pawikans along with graffiti painting contest for the locals. This symbolic event is intended to offer long-term benefits to Bataan by uniting people from all walks of life behind the preservation program and raising awareness about the need of protecting the island's natural environment.

The Pawikan festival is also celebrated annually by the privately owned Montemar Beach Club Inc. at a beach in the town of Bagac. Because they are found along the shores of South China Sea and on the beautiful beaches of Bagac, this is part of the company's effort to maintain and safeguard these endangered species. These two "pawikan" projects—the private commercial initiatives in Bagac and the community volunteer work at the Morong Pawikan Center—highlight the efforts and significance of sea turtle conservation throughout the province of Bataan.

When is it celebrated: This festival is celebrated in the last week of November every year.

Banga Festival (Balanga City)

Balanga City, Bataan, hosts the annual Banga Festival for a weeklong celebration. The Tagalog word "banga," meaning "pot," is supposed to be the inspiration for the name of Bataan's capital city, Balanga. Every year, the people of Balangueños gather for the Banga Festival to reflect on their origins and appreciate how far they've come. The celebration is held around the time of St. Joseph's Day.

The origin of the term "Balanga" is claimed to have been a kind of pot used for cooking and water collection. Banga is the native word for the cooking pot, which is composed of a peculiar clay. The Banga Festival is being held to remember the city's modest beginnings and its subsequent growth and development into now progressive city. This pretty much reminds you of how Quezon celebrates the feast of San Isidro Labrador in their town.

During this day, you can witness a street dancing competition wearing colorful costumes among the locals while carrying their native banga products.

When is it celebrated: This festival is celebrated on the 28th day of April every year.

Pagbubunyi Festival (Limay)

The religious festival reenacts Queen Helena's and her son Constantine's quest for the cross of Jesus Christ. Locals portray the story by wearing costumes and making a public performance of the reenactment of the story that can be witnessed by everyone for free.

When is it celebrated: This festival is celebrated on the 2nd day of May every year.

Bataan Day Celebration (Balanga City)

Araw ng Kagitingan, also known as Bataan Day, is an annual celebration and a national holiday in the Philippines to honor the bravery of Filipino and American troops during World War II. The Bataan Memorial Day Observance commemorates the nation of the Philippines's defeat in the Battle of Bataan and pays tribute to the valor of the Filipino troops who gave their lives there. It is a tradition for the President of the Philippines to preside over the Bataan Day celebrations at the Shrine of Valor atop Mt. Samat, which are also attended by other dignitaries, war veterans, and provincial leaders.

When is it celebrated: This festival is celebrated on the 2nd day of May every year.

Galunggong Festival (Morong)

In honor of Fisherman's Day, or Araw ng Mangingisda, in which participants adorn and join in a variety of events such as a run, a procession along the river, a coastal clean-up project, a culinary competition, and even some trade fair and beach volleyball game.

Galunggung Festival is the main attraction, and it celebrates the common mackerel scad (Decapterus Macarellus). Sabang's Sangguniang Barangay and the Morong Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Resources Management are responsible for putting on the event. The festival's organizers hope that by drawing attention to the contributions of fishermen, they may help the public appreciate how crucial their work is to the community's ability to put food on the table every day.

When is it celebrated: This festival is celebrated from the 14th day to the 15th day of April every year.

Palis Lasa Festival (Abucay)

This is a yearly agro-religious celebration in Mabatang, Abucay. The festivities begin off with a thanksgiving mass, followed by street dancing in elaborate tiger lass also known as "lasa" costumes which are used in making walis tambo.

When is it celebrated: This festival is celebrated in the month of September every year.

An opportunity to celebrate the country's history and patron saints while also showcasing the country's vibrant cultural heritage is what festivals in the Bataan are all about. They are colorful, enormous, and celebrated with much fanfare. That's why every region in the Province of Bataan celebrates a unique festival called "Fiesta" with great enthusiasm.
