Festivals in Cavite: The South's Hidden Gem

26 August 2022
Festivals in Cavite the Souths Hidden Gem

The Province of Cavite was the scene of several pivotal moments during the Philippine Revolution since the province was one of the eight that acted as leaders for the revolution. On top of that, the first president of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo, was born in the province of Cavite, which also boasts a long list of other notable historical figures.

But apart from its rich history, Cavite Province also offers various activities for its tourism industry including natural and cultural attractions as well as the different festivals being celebrated in the province.

Cavite's cultural traditions, culinary specialties, and other province-wide attractions all benefit from the publicity provided by these festival celebrations.

So mark your calendars and let's discover the various festivals in Cavite that you can join in on your next vacation!

Coffee Festival or Pahimis Festival (Amadeo)

The ancient Amadeo term for thank you was "pahimis," which also means "pasasalamat" in Tagalog.

Traditionally, at the end of each harvest season, the farmer would give away his final tin of beans to the community as a gesture of gratitude and in the hopes of bringing good fortune and bountiful crops for the next harvest season. Before beginning a commercial endeavor, the Pahimis will be shared with neighbors over a meal or members of the community will be given a portion of the crop to share with friends and family.

To pay homage to the custom, an annual festival celebrating gratitude and good fortune with coffee takes its name from this traditional ritual. The coffee festival annual event promotes the municipality of Amadeo as a prospective sanctuary of investment in the agri-business and eco-tourism sectors, and aims to support the already strong coffee industry there.

When to visit: This festival is celebrated on the second week of February each year.

Hijas de Maria (General Trias City)

Hijas de Maria is the celebration of the patron saint of General Trias City that lasts for a whole calendar month. The church is decked up in flowers, and a fireworks show is set off in the background.

When to visit: This festival is celebrated for the whole month of May each year.

Wagayway Festival (Imus City)

In Imus, Cavite, the Wagayway Festival is held to remember the sacrifices made by the Filipino people during the Battle of Alapan, when they fought bravely under the leadership of General Emilio Aguinaldo against the Spanish colonizers. The historical site of Imus has been given the name "wagayway" (wave) since it was there that the Philippine flag was first raised to signal our victory over the Spaniards.

When to visit: This festival is celebrated on the 28th day of May each year.

Regada Water Festival (Cavite City)

The Regada Water Festival is considered one of the most vibrant, wild, and arguably "wettest" celebrations in the province of Cavite. Regada is a Chavacano term that originates in Spanish word meaning “to hose or washdown with water.”

Caviteños aren't going to be able to celebrate the vibrant Regada Water Festival without the help of the famous celebrities and bands who perform during the festivity period. You'd best bring a water gun if you want to participate in the festivities at this fair. Get out your largest squirt guns, or better yet, a bucket of water, and join the splashing water fun of this festivity!

When to visit: This festival is celebrated from the 22nd to the 24th day of June each year.

Kawayan Festival (Maragondon)

Indigenous artifacts are paraded around the streets by groups of dancers during the Maragondon Kawayan celebration. In addition, there is a display of bamboo goods in the town square. Residents also show off their artistic skills during the agricultural-tourism event by competing in events like the Arch/Kubo and Kawayan Parol-Making competitions, which are organized by the local government.

Moreover, one of the highlights of the festival was the Karakol Competition, when upbeat street dancing performers show off their finest costumes and routines.

When to visit: This festival is celebrated on the 7th day of September each year.

Tahong Festival (Bacoor City)

Fresh seafood, such as mussels and tahong, is a popular delicacy in the province of Cavite. The provincial government organized a celebration called Tahong Festival in order to spread the word about this tasty treat.

An exhibit of dishes with tahong as the star ingredient is being prepared as part of the festivities to be shown in the town plaza. Also, competitions in the arts fair and culinary contest as well as beauty contest are common. Seminars and trade fair are also often held during the event to educate attendees on the culture of tahong in the city.

When to visit: This festival is celebrated on the 29th day of September each year.

Irok Festival (Indang City)

The irok (Arenga pinata) or sweet palm tree, whose fruit is called a" kaong a" and is sweetened, is an essential element in halo-halo and sweet pastries. In the ancient village of Indang in Cavite, you may find a lovely palm tree whose fruit is used to make vinegar.

The elongated irok leaves are weaved into the costumes of street dancers during Indaga's unique Irok Festival, which celebrates the culmination of the city's founding anniversary.

When to visit: This festival is celebrated on the 1st day of December each year.

Mardicas Festival (Ternate)

The picture of Sto. Nio is carried in a float parade that begins on the river, winds through the streets of the city, and finally arrives at the church. Celebrations include Karakol and street dancing to the marching band music, during which participants wear brightly colored costumes.

When to visit: This festival is celebrated every 18th day of January each year.
