How to Observe Lenten Season in the New Normal
17 February 2021Written by: Angel Gondra
The dry cold season is swiftly ending, and we can now feel that the temperature is slowly getting higher every day. This means that summer is not only coming, but for Christians, it is also the time to prepare for the upcoming Lenten Season and Easter Sunday.
But due to COVID-19, most Church activities are regulated, and certain numbers and protocols during the mass gatherings are still needed to be followed. Last year was a tough time, not just for the Church but also for the people, to contemplate and observe the traditional religious activities we've been practicing and grew up with. Now, after a year of this pandemic, the Church and the people are more prepared to practice their faith while heeding to the government's safety and health rules.
There are six essential days the Christians solemnize during Lent. It always starts with Ash Wednesday, and it emphasizes the start of fasting and abstinence for forty (40) days.
Here is a calendar to serve as guide for Lent and Holy Week 2021.
What to do in Lenten Season during pandemic?
You might be wondering about the safe ways on how to reflect and strengthen your faith during the Holy Season, so here are the lists you could observe and practice:
1. Practice Acts of Kindness to your Family and Friends.
A simple act of kindness always gets a long way, and the best way to start it is inside your home and with your friends. Remind yourself to say at least one compliment to your loved ones every day and make sure to help them with their chores or work. The astonishing thing about these good deeds is you can carry it over even after the Lenten Season and make it a daily routine.
2. Pray the Holy Rosary an Hour a Day.
All of us are guilty of finding excuses whenever we find time to pray the Holy Rosary. No matter how busy you are, this season makes sure to allocate some time to talk with the Blessed Mother about the blessings that you receive every day. Please include our front liners and the world in your prayers that this pandemic may finally come to an end.
3. Take Time to Read the Bible Instead.
This Lenten Season, you can minimize your screen time by an hour and replace it by reading the Bible. You can learn new wisdom from it and help you strengthen your faith and become closer to God.
4. Don't Eat after Dinner.
Fasting starts on Ash Wednesday that will last for 40 days. You can observe it this Holy Season as it will help you contemplate more about your life and reflect the sufferings and sacrifices of the Lord.
5. Avoid Eating Out for 40 Days
Another form of observance that Christians do during the Lenten Season is abstinence. With this, Christians are encouraged to give up at least one of the activities or things that they normally enjoy for 40 days. For people who love eating out, you can avoid doing this activity and enjoy home-cooked meals. You can even help out to control the spread of the virus by staying at home.

6. Reduce Sweets or Alcohol
If you do heavy work and feel that skipping dinner might not be that healthy for you, you can instead try to reduce your sweet or alcohol intake. This kind of fasting will make you join the Holy Season's observance and help you improve your health.
7. Love Your Body by Sleeping Early and Exercising Regularly
This is the best time to spend to take care and treasure your God-given health and body. By sleeping early, you can make sure that you are giving yourself enough rest, and by regular exercise, you can help your body awaken its energy for the day's work.
No matter what your plan is for the Lenten Season, please stay at home or at least lessen your travels.
