Motherhood Doesn’t Mean Giving Up The Things You’re Passionate About
8 March 2021Written by: Cielo Fernando
Between changing diapers and attending conference calls, there's no denying that being a working mom is not a piece of cake and hardly meets the ideal "work-life balance." It's never easy to be a mom while wearing many hats. Some may think that motherhood is the end—the end of pursuing your passion and dreams. But it's not always the case.
As we continue our series of interviews with empowering women to celebrate International Women's Month, Lumina Homes asked three mommy bloggers about being a woman of many things.
Read to know their insights.
Teresa Dumadag of Hands-On Parents while Earning (HOPE) Network
"I think one of the most empowering things I did in my life is when I chose to leave my full-time job and pursue the things I am most passionate about."
Teresa Dumadag is a woman who wears many hats—blogger, entrepreneur, career and parent coach, speaker, and author, among others. But among the many hats that she wears, Teresa's favorite is being a mother, where she pulls inspiration for her contents.
She is the blogger behind the award-winning blog Hands-on Parents while Earning, which won in the 40th Catholic Mass Media Awards. Teresa also handles two other blogs, namely, Mommy Bares All and When My Bridegroom Comes.
Aside from being a blogger, she is the President and Founder of Full Life Cube Publishing and Events Services and the author of BREASTFEEDING: A Journey Worth Taking, which is the #1 Amazon bestseller on Motherhood and Child Care. And, Keep Your Employees Engaged! Low Cost and No Cost Ways, the recent #1 Amazon bestseller on Human Resources and Personnel Management.
What do you love most about being a woman?
I love that I was created to be a nurturing creature, that my natural tendencies are to nurture, care and love. I love that I am a vessel of life and that I was able to give birth to children. I love that through my breasts, my children were nourished to life and they felt the warmth of my love. I love that my brain was designed in such a way that it's natural for me to multitask and to remember things even from long ago. I love that I am uniquely different from men in these areas.
Have you ever experienced discrimination or other inequalities because of your gender? What did you do about it?
I do not recall any experience. Maybe because I do not let this happen to me.
How do you keep yourself inspired?
I read a lot. I also find inspiration in my daily experiences. I pray.
What was the most empowering thing you did in your life?
I think one of the most empowering things I did in my life is when I chose to leave my full-time job and pursue the things I am most passionate about, like starting my own family, starting my own business, and writing more books. It was a leap of faith for me and my husband because of its financial implications. But, I felt in my heart that this was something I needed to do. Amazingly, things fell into place, and that was one big decision I will always be thankful that I made.
Tips for women who are feeling down.
My top 3 tips for women when they feel down are the following:
- Pray. Praying allows us to connect to the source of strength, joy, hope, love, and peace. Whenever I pray, I usually feel better, and I have a better perspective of whatever concern I had.
- Connect with people who support them, like their family members or closest friends.
- Do something (big or small) that makes you happy. We don't always need to depend on others to make ourselves happy. We can start by making ourselves happy.
Anna of My World by Mommy Anna
"The most empowering thing that I did in my life is choosing to be a working mom."
Aside from being a mommy blogger at My World by Mommy Anna, she juggles her day as a wife, mom, and entrepreneur. As busy as she is fulfilling her role as a businesswoman, she makes it to the point that her family comes first.
What do you love most about being a woman?
I love being a woman because I am a mother. I become a selfless person and learn how to love unconditionally. Being a woman makes me more assertive, aim high and be strong.
Have you ever experienced discrimination or other inequalities because of your gender? What did you do about it?
I haven't experienced discrimination. Most of the people that surround me knew how independent I am.
How do you keep yourself inspired?
I keep myself motivated or inspired by continuously reading my bible and inspirational books. At the same time, I work hard for my family.
What was the most empowering thing you did in your life?
The most empowering thing that I did in my life is choosing to be a working mom. Many people would tell me to stop working and stay at home. But I know within myself I can juggle things in my life, and I will keep everything in place.
Tips for women who are feeling down.
Learn to be grateful, appreciate what you see, and always be thankful. If you are feeling down, just take a deep breath and pray everything will fall into place once you pray.
Michelle of Hits and Mrs. PH
"It's okay not to be okay. In life, there are ups and downs, and we have to experience difficulties to appreciate the happy days."
Michelle is the woman behind the blog Hits and Mrs. PH where she creates content about food, events, lifestyle, and opinion. She is also a writer by profession, where she started as a copywriter and now a web content writer.
Her blog was supposed to be a personal online journal but became something else when she received opportunities from different businesses and industries. In her blog, she makes sure that what she offers her readers is something that would interest them as it interests her as a wife, a parent, and an individual.
What do you love most about being a woman?
I love that I can be logical and emotional at the same time. Most of the time, when running a household, there should be a balance of logical thinking and sensitivity to feelings and situations. I'm able to make my mind and heart work when making crucial decisions for the family. So far, it's worked for us.
Have you ever experienced discrimination or other inequalities because of your gender? What did you do about it?
I'm glad to say that I have many male friends who see what I am capable of, even in times when I have self-doubt. In the very few times that I've been treated differently because of my gender, I just shrug it off and think of the people who believe in me. That boosts my confidence and motivates me to do well.
How do you keep yourself inspired?
I do the things I like, whether it's cooking for the family or just reading or watching something. I also like listening to other people's experiences and learning from them.
What was the most empowering thing you did in your life?
I would say having children is the most empowering thing I did in my life. Carrying them inside me for nine (9) months and giving birth to them via CS is no mean feat. Especially with my second child, which I almost miscarried. It takes a strong will to be a mother.
Tips for women who are feeling down.
Just like a K-Drama's title goes, "it's okay to not be okay." In life, there are ups and downs, and we have to experience difficulties to appreciate the happy days. In those days when you feel down, think of happy things, chat with a friend you can unload some emotions too, and eat ice cream.
These women prove that being a mother does not mean you have to give up the things you want so badly. It may be challenging, but you're a woman, and you can do it.
