Pagoda Festival 2023: A Fluvial Procession of Bocaue's Cultural Splendor

Pagoda Festival 2023 A Fluvial Procession of Bocaues Cultural Splendor

The province of Bulacan has always been popular for its monumental role in the shaping of the country's bloody history. It is aptly called the Land of Heroes as the province had been the hometown of revered historical figures such as Gregorio del Pilar, Francisco Balagtas, and Marcelo H. Del Pilar.

Each town and city has something unique to offer that makes them distinct from the rest. Bocaue town, for one, is known to be the primary destination during New Year's Day celebrations where people from across the country go to purchase firecrackers to welcome the new year with a literal bang.

Bocaue is also home to the famous Pagoda Festival — an annual religious celebration that Bocaueñons take pride in as their own cultural treasure. The festival is a highly anticipated even among locals as this gives them an opportunity to celebrate their collective identity and showcase their creative talents through the event. In this article, we feature Bocaue's grand display of its rich cultures and traditions observed every first Sunday of July and know about the town more than just its distinction as the Fireworks Capital of the Philippines.

Bocaue, Bulacan: More than Just the Fireworks Capital of the Philippines

While being dubbed as the country's Fireworks Capital is a tremendous source of pride, there is much more to Bocaue in Bulacan than meets the eye.

For starters, Bocaue is an economically thriving first-class municipality in the Land of Heroes. According to the 2020 census, it is home to 141,412 residents. It started as a barrio of Meycauayan City in 1582 and became a separate municipality in the year 1606.

One of the most notable sites located in the town is the Philippine Stadium found inside the Ciudad de Victoria, which is between Bocaue and the town of Santa Maria. Next to the sports stadium is the Philippine Arena, which came to be known as the world's largest indoor arena with an impressive seating capacity of 55,000.

Bocaue Pagoda Festival: History and Observances

Also known as Bocaue River Festival, it's celebrated annually and is known for its river procession dedicated to the Holy Cross of Wawa. The religious figure was made of wood and was found coursing through Bocaue River's Wawa section during an 1850 typhoon. Legend has it that a woman clung and held onto the Holy Cross and was miraculously saved. The godly figure was then preserved in a riverside church. Since then, a fluvial parade of the grand pagoda was observed to honor and pay tribute to the relic.

But in 1993, the ceremonial barge called the pagoda, which was carrying the Holy Cross, sank because of overloading. This monumental incident was called the Bocaue Pagoda tragedy and has become the subject of the Bocaue River Festival's devotion.

As such, since the year 2014, the festival is being observed every first Sunday of July. The anticipated highlight happens at the latter part of the weeklong celebration where the floating pagoda serves as the centerpiece. Residents and pilgrims then pray for the soul of the victims of the 1993 disaster in the same river where the overloaded pagoda sank.

Not needless to say, the Bocaue Pagoda Festival must not be confused with the Perfume Pagoda Festival, which is a different annual festivity entirely, celebrated in Vietnam by the Vietnamese people.
