The Ati-Atihan Festival
In honor of the Infant Jesus, the town's patron saint is celebrated in January each year.
This festival is celebrated in honor of the baby Jesus, known as Ati-Atihan. Ati-atihan, or "making like Atis," refers to the practice of emulating the aboriginal people of Aklan. Wearing tribal finery and covering oneself with soot are traditions during this fun and loud celebration. You can hear the drums and whistles at the beginning of the procession. You can also listen to people performers screaming the words "Hala Bira!", marking the start of the festival.
Commonly, the main highlights of the Ati-Atihan Festival in the Province of Aklan before the pandemic are the following:
- Parade of Tribes and Floats
- Ati-Atihan Street Dancing
- Religious Procession and Torch Street Dancing
Tangalan Aklan
Tangalan is one of the municipalities in Aklan province situated 19 kilometers northeast of Kalibo, the province's main city. The Sibuyan Sea bounds the 5th class municipality in the north, Ibajay to the east, Makato to the northeast, Malinao to the southeast, and Ibajay to the west.
Previously, it belonged to Makato, Aklan's arrabal. Tondog, Jawili, Dumatad, Afga, Baybay, Dapdap, Pudyot, Tagas, Tamalagon, Panayakan, Vivo, Lanipga, Napatag, and Tamoko are some of the barrios that were included when the municipality was created.
Some of the travel attractions that can be found in the Municipality of Tangalan Aklan are supported by "Project Bugna," which includes the Jawili Beach Resorts, Dumatad Souvenir Shop, and Bughawi Reforestation Project.
You must not miss other tourist spots when visiting Tangalan are the Tangalan Church and the impressive Afga Wave-Rock Formation.
St. John Nepomucene Parish Church
This classic church is also known as Tangayan Church. From dawn to dusk for over 28 years, men, women, and children carried limestone and coral blocks from the quarries of Barangay Afga to the town center on their heads and shoulders in a great polo or forced labor. Having been completed in 1889 and still standing today, the century-old church has limestone and coral walls and is one of the province's oldest churches.
The bell tower rises from the left side of the building, creating an asymmetrical facade. However, closer inspection reveals that it is a later addition to the structure, as shown by concrete as the construction material. The original stone church's shape is also entirely symmetrical.
The St. John Nepomucene Church is located at Brgy. Poblacion, Tangalan, Aklan. You can get here by riding a bus from Kalibo Bus Station that will pass by Tangalan. From the Tangalan town center, you can take a walk going to the church.
Afga Wave - Rock Formation
This natural phenomenon results from wave action on a rocky beach, and the result is a wave-rock structure. St. John Nepomucene Parish Church's distinctive limestone and coral walls are said to have been crafted from the wave-rock formation as a quarry site. Stratified in yellow, grey, black, and reddish-brown tones, it is a detrital form of sedimentary rock. Through its many gaps and crevices, dwarf mangroves have found a place to grow and can also witness when you visit the site.
One of the additional landmarks in this tourist site is the Afga Lighthouse. Once you've arrived here, you'll be able to relax for a little while. For beachgoers, the rock structure is surrounded by a white sand beach that serves as a haven for beach enthusiasts. Low tide is the optimum time to visit the Rock Formation since the major feature is hidden during high tide.
Agfa Wave Rock, natural phenomenon in Tangalan, Aklan, is situated in a barrio called Agfa, which is close to the town center.
Boracay Island
The world-famous Boracay Island is a beach and a nature lover's dream come true.It can be found in Malay, Aklan. This stunning island has garnered worldwide acclaim for its pristine white sand beaches and turquoise waters despite its small size.
Additionally, the area is rich in marine and tropical attractions. Many resorts and commercial establishments have sprung up over the island in the last few years, with the majority of them concentrated on the four-kilometer White Beach.
