Holy Cross of Tanza

One of the few Spanish churches constructed during the Spanish colonial period in Tanza, Cavite is the Holy Cross of Tanza also known as the Tanza Church. It was established in the mid-nineteenth century.

It was only in 1839 that the inhabitants of Tanza (previously Santa Cruz de Malabon) chose to build their own parish church, which is officially named Holy Cross Parish Church or Diocesan Shrine of Saint Augustine. On March 23, 1897, Emilio Aguinaldo and Mariano Trias took their vows as Philippine Revolutionary Government President and Vice President at the church convent of Holy Cross of Tanza, making it a significant site in Philippine Revolutionary history.

It's amazing to think that the church is still standing after a century, despite the surrounding regions having moved on and surrendered to new colonial rulers and changing times. Even if the buildings around the church had undergone transformation, the Tanza people's strong belief and faith still remain the same.

St. Jude Parish Church

Another Spanish Church that was built in Tanza is the St. Jude Parish Church. In fact, these days, St. Jude has transformed from its initial goal of a purely Chinese parish into something much more.

The Chinese have long had a presence in the Philippines. Spanish colonists brought their missionaries, who began to focus on evangelism and pastoral care for the Chinese population in Manila. After a while, the Chinese Parish was merged with the Binondo Parish and became part of it. Although this arrangement did not endure forever and in fact, it was only in place until 1954. At that time, there were three additional Chinese parishes built by Archbishop Rufino J. Santos in that year, with help from the Roman Consistorial Congregation. And St. Jude Parish was one of them.

Archbishop Rufino J. Santos donated the land on which St. Jude Parish now stands. On September 28, 1958, the church's blessing and cornerstone were laid. On the 23rd of October 1960, the finished church was blessed.
