Thank you, COVID-19 Frontliners!

3 April 2020

The whole nation was caught off guard last month with the sudden lockdown in the country due to the instantaneous rise of COVID-19 cases across the Philippines.

We all struggle mentally and financially as the sudden lockdowns crippled the entire economy in the different areas in the country. We are advised to stay at home and must wear masks whenever we go out to buy our daily essentials.

Indeed, this global crisis is not a joke as we experienced tough times in an unanticipated shift of our daily routines and lives. Most of us are used to mingling, socializing, and going out, which affects our mental health. Meanwhile, some lose their jobs as they can't go to the office or be on the field to prevent the widespread of the virus. Most jobs are brought remotely and became work from home for the meantime.

But all these struggles and challenging times are incomparable with the trouble and toughest hours that our frontliners face at this moment. Aside from the shortage of PPE's and COVID-19 equipment in hospitals, not to mention the lack of public transportation, their lives and health are also at risk to deliver medical service and save lives.

We are strongly indebted to them at these times as many of them are starting to succumb to the deadly coronavirus with a lack of rest and sleep, just to give us the medical assistance that we need. But our medical workers are not just the frontliners that we should be grateful for—we also have our grocery store employees, delivery drivers, warehouse workers, and uniformed service employees.

There are numerous ways that we can show cheer, support, and show our gratitude to our frontliners:

1. Post a warm and heartfelt message on social networking platforms.

It's true that our ability to communicate and keep in touch with other people became limited because of the nationwide lockdown. But thanks to the magic of the internet, we can send virtually our gratitude and support to all our frontliners by posting a warm and heartfelt message on our social media accounts. If you have friends who work as frontliners, you can even tag them in your post to remind them that we are here to cheer them on even in the midst of physical and social distancing. Social media is an excellent method to show appreciation for front-line employees by using hashtags such as #InThisTogether, #COVIDHeroes, or #ThankYouOurFrontliners.

You can even post a reminder to your friends to observe the proper protocol and stay at home to help lessen the COVID-19 cases in the country.

2. Volunteer to run errands or prepare a meal for the frontliners in your neighborhood.

There are ways to contribute even if you don't directly know someone who is working on the frontlines. Since most of us are cooped up at home and might have much free time, we can prepare and cook meals for our frontliners. Get in touch with your local community centers or check out your neighborhood's Facebook or public pages to see if they need any help. Know the needs of the frontline workers in your region, and then do what will have the most influence on their well-being, like buying them additional goods at the grocery store or providing a meal to show your thanks. Many national and local companies are bringing meals to help front-line employees, which you can also contribute and participate in.

3. Stay at home.

With all the various ways you can show gratitude and support to our frontliners, staying at home is the best way to show your appreciation for them. We can keep COVID-19 from spreading if we all remain at home. As a result, please travel only when you must visit the grocery store, doctor's office, pharmacy, and to walk dogs or assist the people and the vulnerable when necessary. Stay at least six feet away from other people and use a face mask if necessary while out in public.

Other ways and health protocols that you can observe to avoid the spread of the novel coronavirus according to the World Health Organization or WHO are:

  • When you go out to acquire your essentials, even if someone doesn't seem to be unwell, keep a safe distance from them with at least 1 meter.
  • Wear a mask every time that you go outside. If in closed spaces or indoors like offices or hospitals and you can't physically separate yourself from the people around you, make sure to also wear your mask at all times.
  • Closed places should always be avoided in favor of well-ventilated, open ones. Meanwhile, if you're at home, make sure that your room is properly ventilated by opening a window.
  • Wash your hands often. You can use soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Keep yourself healthy by always eating food like fruits and vegetables and drinking a lot of water.
  • When you cough or sneeze, keep your nose and mouth covered with your bent elbow or tissue to avoid spreading germs and viruses.
  • If you're feeling under the weather, avoid going out.

In the event that you have a high temperature, a cough, or are having trouble breathing, and you should consult a doctor at once. Make a phone call ahead of time so that your healthcare professional can point you to the appropriate health facility. This will keep you safe and help to minimize the transmission of viruses and other infectious diseases.
