5 DIY Christmas Decorations For a Lovely Holiday Home

If there's one nationality that is arguably the most excited for Christmas, it's got to be Filipinos! After all, we start the holiday countdown by September (that's four months ahead!), and also commence taking out last year's Christmas decorations from the storage room and feel thrilled at the prospect of redecorating.

If you want to add more decorations to your house aside from the ones you already have, you've come to the right blog to adopt easy DIY tips for Christmas home decorations. Lumina Homes provides helpful advice about practically anything for everyone's home. Let's begin adding your existing holiday decor with some DIY ornaments below!

5 DIY Christmas Decoration Ideas every Homeowner Must Try

Some of the most commonly used holiday decorations are a Christmas tree, garlands, wreaths, candy canes, stockings, Christmas balls, Santa Claus figurines, and many more. These can be bought online without setting foot outside of your abode, but DIY-ing them can be a lot of fun. Below, check out our DIY Christmas decor ideas to craft your perfect holiday home!

1. DIY Christmas tree ornaments

There is little excitement in hanging ready-made Christmas balls to your Christmas tree, so make it extra fun, challenging, and fulfilling by DIY-ing ornaments to embellish your Christmas tree! Unleash your artistic self and craft these simple yet elegant ornament ideas.

What you'll be needing:

  • Cardboard sheets
  • Colored papers
  • Colored markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Puncher
  • String
  • Glitters

To start, cut out a mid-sized circle from your cardboard sheet and another from colored papers to add life to the ornament. Using your colored markers and pens, let your imagination do the wonders and draw what will add style to your soon-to-be DIY Christmas balls! To make it even more elegant, sprinkle some glitter! Once through, punch a hole on top of the circle to tie the string for hanging. And there you go!

Another design idea that you must consider is family photographs you've taken the whole year as personalized ornaments for your Christmas trees! After all, the holiday season is instrumental to the gathering of family and friends, and immortalized moments through photographs, and hanging them on your Christmas tree, could not be even more lovely.

If you don't have a Christmas tree, no worries! You can improvise one using your bare, immaculate walls. If you have accumulated a pile of Christmas cards over the course of several years, make them your DIY Christmas decor by transforming them into a Christmas tree shape!

2. DIY holiday wreath

Do not leave your door without anything that is reminiscent of the holiday season, so hang a DIY wreath to decorate your doors! Wreaths are one of the must-try decorations aside from the perennial Christmas trees. Here's what you will need:

  • Styrofoam
  • Colored paper
  • Magazine
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Puncher
  • String
  • Glitters

Cutting out a circle with a hole in the middle from the styrofoam will be your wreath base. To cover it with ornaments, cut out star-shaped designs from any paper you can find at home, even a magazine would do! You can also make a snowflake-inspired wreath by cutting one out of a colored paper which you could sprinkle with glitter for elegance. A poinsettia flower design would be awesome, too! And to perfect the foam wreath form, wrap the unadorned parts with foliage crafted through green-colored papers. The result would doubtless satisfy you!

3. DIY family paper stockings

Crafting your own stocking is a great activity for a family to do together in anticipation of Santa’s metaphorical arrival. After all, a hanging stocking in the house is believed to be where Santa Claus will put his goodies for kids who behaved very well throughout the whole year! It’s going to be exciting for kids, so don't miss a stocking as part of your holiday Christmas decor! Here's what you'll be needing:

  • Patterned paper
  • Plain colored cardstock
  • Gold or silver glitter cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Puncher

Now, it may seem like DIY-ing a stocking is cut out only for the more prolific crafters. But it could be done even for beginners. It's fun learning a skill, and what best occasion to do that if not during Christmas when we hang gorgeous decorations to give the house the holiday vibes?

But to take the deceptively easier route, we can try doing paper stockings first. The first step is to pattern the silhouette of the stockings to the patterned wallpaper. There is a downloadable and printable pattern online, so you can make convenient use of those.

After that, cut the flaps from the colored cardstock. You can use double-sided tape to secure the flap to each stocking that you'll make. To personalize the design, spell out the names of every family member using the glitter paper, and glue them on the flaps. Then, punch a hole on top of each stocking to tie a ribbon for hanging. You can hang these family paper stockings on your Christmas tree or simply put them in an undecorated part of the house as you see fit!

4. DIY garlands

Decorating the house to make it impeccably holiday-appropriate will force you to become more resourceful when looking for materials. Have you ever thought of using dried orange peels for a makeshift Christmas garland? It makes for an ornament that's attractive and with the pleasant scent of citrus fruit! Here's what you will be needing:

  • A large orange
  • Cookie cutter
  • Paring knife
  • Metal pin
  • Twine or yarn

While the fruit may dry out in a couple of days, it will keep its bright, vibrant color. To make a crafty design out of an orange peel, grab a large orange and carefully cut off both ends using a paring knife. Pull off the peel as gently as possible to not ruin the cut. Then using a little cookie cutter, cut out your desired shape from the peel, like a star. Use a metal pin to cut a little hole on top of the peel. Tie it with yarn or twine, and you're all set!

You can put this to complement your evergreen garland. The combination of green and orange makes for a great garland ornament (or a wreath, for that matter)! If you plan to DIY your Christmas gift wraps as well, your orange peel ornament can also be pinned on a gift package for extra design. Talk about a gift with an organic smell! Your receiver would surely appreciate the effort you will put into it!

5. DIY snowflake popsicles

Who says you can't aspire a home to be a mini winter wonderland just because there is no snow in the Philippines? You absolutely can, at least for the sake of Christmas! If you have a lace at home, you can easily make use of it as a snowflake as they closely resemble each other. But if not, you can easily craft fake snow through colored popsicle sticks! What you'll be needing:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Hot glue
  • Twine
  • Glitters
  • Pompoms

This is going to be easy peasy! Ideally, you'd have to choose colored popsicles so you wouldn't have to color or even spray paint each manually. But at the same time, doing so can be more fun for your kids! Either way, a snowflake ornament is doable with some popsicle sticks.

To craft the shape of a snowflake, just put four popsicles by hot gluing them together in between. After that, also put some hot glue on the back and affix the twine for hanging. Finally, put some more hot glue on the popsicles and sprinkle the glitters! For added effect, attach a pompom from all the edges of the snowflake. Mission accomplished!
