9 Best Twitter Alternatives for Social Media Networking

9 Best Twitter Alternatives for Social Media Networking

If you're on social media quite a lot, you've likely come across news of Elon Musk taking over free-speech Twitter, a social networking site infamous for its micro-blogging feature that lets everyone write, in limited characters, what they think about. Lumina Homes is also on the platform, publishing bits of the latest blogs and news for the benefit of its audience.

Twitter has been around since 2006, and its active users remain massive. But many people are getting turned off by the platform because of issues involving its new billionaire chief executive. If you're one of those people who want to shy away from the platform's growing toxicity, this article will give you Twitter alternatives that you can consider switching to, at least for now.

What's the latest on Twitter?

New owner Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, officially announced acquiring 9.2 percent of Twitter's shares in early April, making him Twitter's biggest shareholder, which totals $2.64 billion. In less than a month, Twitter divulged accepting Elon Musk's offer of $44 billion for full ownership. The process of acquisition itself was in turmoil, with erstwhile Twitter owners suing Musk, and Musk having second thoughts about acquiring the platform.

Fast forward months after, Elon Musk became the official Twitter CEO. After his takeover, he laid off thousands of Twitter workers following his ultimatum that employees must decide ASAP whether to stay at the company or quit. In consequence, Twitter employees did quit in droves, with a three-month severance pay promised by the billionaire owner.

After a heated exchange with an employee, Musk also fired the latter in a tweet, which has been deleted, according to an interview made by National Public Radio with the former employee.

That, fake news, internet trolls, and more are giving Twitter, its employees, and its millions of users a tumultuous time, with many account holders being prompted to look for social media alternatives that they could hop on to in the wake of the chaotic Elon Musk Twitter takeover.

Best Twitter Alternative: Some Established, Some Emerging

Below, check some of the best Twitter alternatives for you, most of which, if not all, have their own rules. Not necessarily with the idea of shutting down your Twitter account, but simply for the fun of trying something new. Who knows, one of these emerging sites will actually become huge in the future, and you will be one of its earliest users?

1. Reddit

Believe it or not, Reddit is a year older than Twitter. Established in 2005, the social media platform thrives on its structure of stimulating intellectual discussion that borders on being a forum. If you're on Twitter to check reviews and discussions concerning a current trend, Reddit is a good, if not a better, alternative to Twitter. The social news site will let you come across like-minded people with whom you could discuss topics you like to talk about.

2. Discord

While more catered to and more popular among the online gaming community, Discord is a good alternative site for group chat and online chats with friends and like-minded people. Established in 2015, it has ceased becoming just exclusive to online gamers and is now a welcome platform outside of the gaming community, making it a legitimate social media site that now caters to more than 140 million active monthly users, according to Business of Apps.

3. Tumblr

This site triumphs in promoting creative expression as well as epitomizing it among its mostly young demographic. Tumblr definitely qualifies as a social network site with similar features to Twitter and Facebook. And much like Twitter users, Tumblr account holders can publish snippets of texts and post images and is regarded as a microblog. The platform currently caters to more than 400 million users. It was launched in 2007 and was bought by Yahoo in the year 2013 for $1.1 billion.

4. Clubhouse

Anchored with an attractively unorthodox slogan of witnessing the " most unlikely collisions of people," Clubhouse was established in 2020 as a podcast platform initially titled Talkshow. Its legitimacy and trustworthiness as a social media site can be said due to the fact that social media giants Facebook, Spotify, and yes, Twitter, attempted to "copy" the site for its audio-chat rooms feature. Facebook was very vocal about its attempt at copying. Clubhouse is indeed a great alternative if you want to experience fostering friendships sans faces and images.

5. Mastodon

This is arguably the perfect example of a no-nonsense alternative to Twitter. First operated in 2016, open-source Mastodon advertises itself as a social networking site that curates a home feed with content that matters to its users, and not "what a corporation thinks [they] should see." "Tweets" are "toots" in Mastodon - which allows account holders to post texts, images, links, and information on the platform. The difference is that, prior to having an actual feed similar to Twitter, users are obliged to select a region, topic, or language from which to log on. In 2021, its German owner Eugen Rochko announced that the software is now non-profit, and is meant to benefit the public rather than shareholders.

6. CounterSocial

Its oxymoronic name notwithstanding, CounterSocial first went live in 2017. It prides itself as a social media platform that does not tolerate nations with a hostile nature and a tendency to infiltrate servers for trolling and fomenting disinformation. The site also claims to monitor emergency radio traffic. Furthermore, it is also bereft of advertisements or any sponsored content. It's a Twitter alternative that's still trying to gain traction, with not a few expressing dissatisfaction with the site. It is apparently not perfect, but users still hop on it just to get away with Twitter's issues and, yes, Elon Musk.

7. USync

Still new to the social media world, USync describes itself as a social media platform where an "entirely new social experience awaits" its account users. Unlike most social media and mobile apps, USync is a paid service costing a one-time payment of $3.99. Is it worth it? Since it is still relatively new, only time will tell, but it is sure worth trying as a Twitter replacement. It allows users to post both long-form content in the name of "Story" and "Scribbles" for shorter microblog-like content.

8. Cohost

This site is a work in progress, with an app yet to be available for smartphone users. Its stream of posts is arranged chronologically, unlike other social media giants that purely rely on algorithms. Variety describes Cohost as a "cross" between Twitter and Tumblr, but sans the algorithms and promotional content that annoy a lot of social media users.

9. Tribel Social

Just like other emerging Twitter-alternative sites, Tribel promotes the site as a smarter, kinder social media platform in a digital world where initially innocuous conversations turn into a heated exchange involving character assassinations and argumentum ad hominems. It is founded by two left-leaning social activists Rafael Rivero and Omar Rivero. Needless to say, its users comprise mostly members of the legal left. For the conservatives, Truth Social is yet another Twitter alternative owned by former US president Donald Trump that promises its target audience the absence of toxicities that they experience on Twitter.
