List of Bulacan's Fantastic Annual Festivals
Believe it or not, different festivities are celebrated almost every month of the year. From mardi-gras-inspired street dances to fluvial float parades, Bulacan offers delightful and fascinating festivals you will never forget.
1. Minasa Festival
Showcasing the municipality of Bustos’ delicacies and agricultural products, Minasa Festival is held every 11th to 20th of January. It’s a week-long celebration that features a street dancing competition, native delicacies displays, food stalls, and a culmination night. But, the festival's main feature is the Minasa cookies, a less sugary, toasted version of cookies. At the end of the event, there’s an extravagant fireworks display to give visitors one-of-a-kind amusement.
2. Santo Niño de Malolos Festival
Every last week of January, Malolos holds the Santo Niño Festival. It is a feast to celebrate with solemnity, pomp, and great anticipation. This festival starts with a holy mass followed by a “prusisyon ng mga bata.” During the grand parade, there’s also a procession of “higantes” or Papier-mâché giants, brass bands, magicians and clowns, folk dancers, and stilts. Then, the grand Santo Nino procession starts in the afternoon to honor the said patron. There are also hundreds of carrozas bearing the Holy Child Jesus' image and ending an event with a continuous fireworks display.
3. Chicharon Festival
Chicharon Festival is celebrated every month of February in Santa Maria, Bulacan. Chicharon is a local snack made of dried-up pork and deep-fried to make it crunchier with a crackling sound from your every bite.
4. Balagtasan Festival
Balagtasan Festival kicks off every 2nd of April, which is also the birthday of the Prince of Tagalog Poets Francisco Balagtas Baltazar. It’s a week-long fiesta celebration that includes balagtasan duels or poetic debates scheduled in various schools and villages in Balagtas town.
5. Barong at Saya Festival
In Pandi, Bulacan, Barong at Saya Festival is also celebrated every 17th of April. It is also a week-long event showcasing the creative and quality products of the municipality and their pride, barong at saya.
6. Halamang Dilaw Festival
Halamang Dilaw or Luyang Dilaw Festival usually happens every first Sunday of May to pay tribute to nature’s wonder root crop called turmeric ginger or luyang dilaw. This festival is complete with funfairs, exhibits, street dancing, and many more.
7. Kneeling Carabao Festival
The municipality of Pulilan also celebrates Kneeling Carabao Festival every May 14-15, which is also a feast of San Isidro Labrador. Farmers of Pulilan town pay tribute to their patron saint. This glorious thanksgiving festival is famous for its grandiose parade of water buffalos or carabaos decorated in colorful costumes.
8. Buntal Hat Festival
Head to Baliuag and celebrate the Buntal Hat Festival every May 26th, which is also the town's founding anniversary. Buntal Hat is a local hat made from the fiber of extracted buri palm leaves. This festival is held to preserve the traditional buntal hat-making and its local industry.
9. Kasilonawan Festival
If you believe in miracles, you can visit Obando to celebrate Kasilonawan Festival every May 17-19. A festival held to honor three (3) patrons, namely, Santa Clara (St. Clare of Assisi), San Pascual Baylon, and Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepcion de Salambao. This festival is known for childless couples dancing on the streets, called the Obando fertility dance.
10. Calumpit Libad Festival
Every June 23, a fluvial float parade is held in Calumpit, Bulacan, called Calumpit Libad Festival. It is also the feast of Saint John the Baptist. Well-decorated pagodas pass the rivers of Angat, Pampanga, and Bagbag.
11. Bocaue River Festival
Another fluvial procession is also held in Bulacan called the Bocaue River Festival or popularly known as Pagoda sa Wawa. This annual town fiesta happens every July 4-7 in Bocaue in honor of the Holy Cross of Wawa. The main attraction of this annual festival is the well-decorated colorful pagodas built in barges and small boats.
12. Casay Festival
Every August 13, Norzagaray celebrates the Casay Festival, which is the founding anniversary of the town as well. Casay Festival showcases colorful costumes in street dancing as the music play. Casay was Norzagaray's first name, derived from a silver kingfisher or casay.
13. Tanglawan Festival
The city of San Jose del Monte celebrates Tanglawan Festival every September 3-10. It's a week-long event, which is also the city's anniversary. Tanglawan means light that will guide the San Josenos into a great future ahead.
14. Singkaban Festival
Dubbed the mother of all festivals in Bulacan, Singkaban Festival kicks off its one-week celebration every September 8-15. This festival showcases the arts and culture of Bulacan and the feast of Our Lady of Victory in Malolos. This festival has fun-filled activities such as street dance competitions, a float parade, an art expo, and exhibits of Bulacan's rich history and culture.
15. Suguran Festival
Happened every 4th of October, Meycauayan also celebrates Suguran Festival as the town also kicks off the feast of their patron Saint Francis of Assissi. Suguran is a re-enactment of how a place brimming with bamboo was discovered in the middle of the fight between two tribes. Based on the legend, it is also the place where the battle ended, now called Meycauayan.
16. Salubong Festival
Before the year ends, Plaridel celebrates Salubong Festival every December 29-30. It’s a 400-year-old tradition highlighting a colorful horse parade with street dancers wearing baro at saya. Salubong Festival is also the feast of Saint James Apostle in Plaridel.
