Bridging Geographical Gap: The Panguil Bay Bridge Project
14 April 2023When we think of long bridges in the Philippines, we easily think of San Juanico Bridge. While it used to be the longest bridge in Southeast Asia, under Marcos's presidency, there's a new construction project that benefits the first half of Mindanao, under President Marcos Jr.'s term and it is called the Panguil Bay Bridge.
Considered the longest water-spanning bridge in Northern Mindanao, this site plans to take an active role towards a more integrated role of Mindanao and accelerate their economy like the rest of the country.
Lumina Homes is here to give you a primer about this site is a bridge that physically and metaphorically connects Tangub City, Misamis Occidental not only to Lanao del Norte but also to the rest of the Philippines.
What You Need to Know about the Panguil Bay Bridge Project
The Goal of Building the Panguil Bay Bridge
This two-way, two-lane each Panguil Bay Bridge is a flagship infrastructure project of the government that was studied long before it was constructed. With this bridge, it aims to have inter-island connectivity with Tubod, Lanao del Norte and Tangub, Misamis Occidental.
The Panguil Bay Bridge Project will finish the main bridge (extra-dosed type) which is 320 meters long. To be specific, this 1,920-meter-long approach bridge is made of pre-stressed concrete girders and an approach road. Once built, it will have the longest span in Mindanao.
Once Panguil Bay Bridge is completely constructed in 2023, the distinction of San Juanico Bridge, the 2.16-km bridge that connects Samar and Leyte provinces in Eastern Visayas Region, ends. In its place will be Panguil Bay Bridge, with a total length of 3.17 kilometers.
Once this bridge project is completed, it aims to reduce travel time to just seven minutes as opposed to the present connectivity between Ozamiz City/ Tangub City and Tubod through Roll-On, Roll-Off (RoRo) vessel which has a travel time of about two hours to two and a half (2.5) hours including loading and unloading time. Before the construction of the bridge, the current land travel traffic crossing over a distance of 100 kilometers is at two hours to 2.5 hours.
Current status of the Panguil Bay Bridge Project Site
The Panguil Bay Bridge is now 63 percent finished, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), at the time of writing. The plan is to have a funded, implemented construction site and eventually a fully finished bridge to connect Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, Tubod, Lanao del Norte, and hopefully, other parts of Northern Mindanao as well, as soon as possible.
According to reports, the Panguil Bay Bridge now has completed 54 bored piling works, 36 pier columns and abutments, and 32 copings, which can make this superstructure meet its ends at Tubod and Tangub City, using an incremental launching method (ILM).
To make this feat happen, the Department's Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain went for a site inspection on Thursday, March 9, 2023. During the site visit, he have spoken with the people responsible for the project and urged the joint venture contractors. These groups are composed of Namkwang Engineering & Construction Corp together with Gumgwang Construction Co., Ltd and Kukdong Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. With the engineering consultant Yooshin Engineering Corporation, Kyong-Ho Engineering & Architects Co., Ltd, and Pyunghwa Engineering Consultants Ltd to complete the vast pipeline at an accelerated pace.
Department Undersecretary Sadain further reported that teams are now working round-the-clock according to the improved formulated measures. This is done to achieve the completion of the Panguil Bay Bridge and to catch up with the delays brought on by the previous suspension of construction work.
The project's design and build phases have been pushed back from the beginning due to several instances such as the COVID-19 pandemic from March 16 - July 2020. The Panguil Bay Bridge project faced another setback in the last quarter of 2022, as construction became affected by the climate, which includes rainy days and strong currents of Panguil Bay.
The ₱7.37 Billion budget was from a loan agreement between the Government of the Philippines or GOP and the Korean Export-Import Bank or Korea Eximbank. The Panguil Bay Bridge project looks forward to help enhance the transportation capacity and efficiency of the Mindanao region and its socio-economic development, especially in terms of tourism, agriculture, industrial, and trade and commerce.
Under the guidance of the Department of Public Works and Highways DPWH, the Panguil Bay Bridge project area officially started last February 2020. This project site is one of the Build Better More Program of the government. It is expected to achieve construction completion supposedly by December 2023, but according to completion Department Undersecretary Sadain, they aim to make traffic cross the bridge by the first half of 2024.
