The Province of Albay is a souvenir for every traveler and tourist. It turns out that, as a result of the shortlisting of Mayon Volcano for UNESCO's World Heritage Site, Albay has become associated with the majestic Mayon's beauty. A hidden tourist jewel, the province is now shining brightly as a destination for enjoyment, relaxation, and travel.

As we talk about heritage and culture, do you know that there are at least 19 festivals in Albay, held throughout the year in various towns and localities?

Tourists may expect to see people dancing in the streets in honor of a religious or agricultural festival every month of the year, no matter where they go. Over the course of a few days, these gatherings offer a wide range of activities designed to highlight the unique aspects of the community.

Cultural Events, Trade Fairs, and Annual Festival celebrated in Albay

Here are some of the festivals being celebrated yearly in the Province of Albay so don't miss them when you visit this promising place:

Magayon Festival (Albay)

Magayon Festival, based on the Mayon Volcano mythology, is a celebration of the province's richness and natural beauty that takes place every year in the month of May. It's hard to beat the dramatic staging of the tragic love story of Daragang Magayon and Panganoron, whose tragic deaths sparked the eruption of Mount Etna.

When is it celebrated: Magayon Festival is celebrated for the whole month of May.

Paroy Festival (Libon)

It is a celebration of Albay's primary source of income, "paroy," or rice, which is reflected in the festival's name. It is because the Municipality of Libon is also known as the Albay rice granary, and this festival is celebrated as the townfolks' thanksgiving of the land's plentiful harvest. It includes a street parade, a sports fest, the world's longest tilapia, corn barbeque, and many other events.

When is it celebrated: Paroy Festival is celebrated from 19th to 25th of July every year.

Sarung Banggi Festival (Sto. Domingo)

In the Philippines, Sarung Banggi is the most famous song of Bicol, sung by Potenciano Gregorio, a native of Sto. Domingo, was also a songwriter. On the third week of May, the late composer was born, and the festival is held each year to commemorate his life and achievements.

Bicol is possibly the only area in the Philippines that can lay claim to a regional folk song that encapsulates the character and aspirations of its people. One of the most famous and well-known folk songs in the Philippines, Sarung Banggi is a love ballad from the region of Bicol. It means "one night," and it relates to the story of a romantic meeting between a guy and a beautiful girl from a small town.

When is it celebrated: Sarung Banggi Festival is celebrated from 10th to 20th of May every year.

Tabak Festival (Tabaco)

Tabak Festival is a celebration of the hard work and creativity of the Tabaquenos in creating their own cutlery. The phrase "Tabak ko! Tabak ko!" which can be translated as "My sword! My sword!" in English, is how the festival came to be known as tabak. Barangay Cobo in Tabaco City is famed for its "blacksmiths."

When is it celebrated: Tabak Festival is celebrated from 16th to 25th of June every year.

Ibalong Festival (Legazpi)

A commemoration of Bicolanos' socio-historical and cultural heritage based on the Ibalong Epic, which depicts the courage and strength of three heroes, Baltog, Handyong, and Bantong, in their battles against the villains Tandayog, Oryol, Rabot, and other wild monsters that threatened their place and orderliness.

These events highlighted street parades and a stage reenactment of Ibalong epic showcasing how the three heroes won over the wild monsters.

When is it celebrated: Ibalong Festival is celebrated from 10th to 29th of August every year.

Cagsawa Festival (Daraga)

It is not the remembrance of the disaster's horrors that will be celebrated during the Cagsawa Festival, but rather the Cagsawa Festival aims to honor the tenacious spirit and resiliency of the Albayanos. For the month of February, the world-famous and ancient Cagsawa Ruins is the site of the annual Cagsawa Festival.

Cagsawa Ruins is one of Albay's most historic sites since it was the site of the Mayon Volcano's most catastrophic eruption in recorded history. It is estimated that many were murdered, including those who sought shelter in this stone church during the eruption and were smothered by the fast-flowing volcanic material. During the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1814, this belfry was all that remained of the settlement. It's currently one of Daraga Albay's most popular tourist destinations, and the world-famous Cagsawa Ruins also never fails to wow tourists.

When is it celebrated: Cagsawa Festival is celebrated for the whole month of February.

Nito-Talahib Festival (Manito)

For the nito-talahib, also known as "common" grass or "kans" grass, this annual event honors its importance in the history of the region and in the lives of its inhabitants. It was given the name "Manito" by the early locals because of its abundance of nito, a rattan-like vine that clings to the ground.

When is it celebrated: Nito-Talahib Festival is celebrated from the 14th to 23rd of October every year.

Lubid Festival (Malilipot)

It's an occasion to showcase the numerous applications and significance of the local community's primary source of income — abaca hemp, popularly known as lubid, which the Municipality of Malilipot produces in large quantities. Participants in the street dance parade will be decked up in brightly colored abaca costumes, which will serve as the centerpiece for the day's festivities.

Abaca, also known as Manila hemp, is one of the main sources of revenue in the province of Bicol, particularly in rural regions, and it helps support small-scale companies.

When is it celebrated: Lubid Festival is celebrated from 8th to 16th of July every year
