Maria Sigrid Dugeno-Lo is a Bacolod-based mommy blogger behind Lovingly Mama, where she writes about her memories as a mother to two talented and beautiful daughters while homeschooling in Bacolod.

When a woman becomes a mother, do you think it's compromising female empowerment?

Personally, I don't think so. Having children does not limit me as a woman; rather, it has expanded my territory. Now, I have daughters whom I can nurture and guide in Christian values so that they can become responsible, upright, and productive citizens who are socially as well as environmentally conscious. The legacy of good and kindness that I leave my children will reverberate not just in their generation but will also make bigger waves in the generations to come.

Is motherhood a strength or a weakness?

I have always thought of myself as physically weak, emotionally clingy, and with a very low threshold of pain. When I gave birth via C-Section after more than a day of intensive labor, I found the strength that I never knew I had.

When the pandemic happened, I never thought that I could hold the fort while we concerned ourselves with everybody's physical, financial, emotional, mental, and psycho-social well-being. Being a mother made me discover the strengths I never thought I had if only I were left in an empty nest.

What do you love most about being a mother?

While I appear annoyed with the endless times the word "Mom" is called out in a day, I feel loved and needed. Moreover, I love to see the little miracles in our children's lives, especially their silly jokes and sincere thank yous for a good meal.

What is your role at home?

I think I wear so many hats. I am their confidante, playmate, cook, stylist, hair cutter, makeup artist, photographer, walking encyclopedia, "oilbularyo," and their all-around annoying playmate.

What is the most difficult task a mother does?

It's mediating between the girls and helping them resolve differences in a peaceful manner.

How does your home make you feel happy?

I am an introvert so being at home with my family makes me happy and content, and when everybody is grateful no matter how little we have or if they don't get what they want.

How important is it for you as a mother to give your family the life they should have? And what do you do to achieve that life?

I envision the children learning in different ways, and that is why we have homeschooled them. I also envision them in our own expansive, forested land where we live simply yet sustainably. That is why our family goal is to be able to buy a parcel of land that we can reforest, our own paradise near, or, in the city.

Do you think having your own place makes it easier for your family to achieve your goals?

Yes. At present we live in the city surrounded by buildings. But with our family goal, that will be our contribution to help the environment.

How does your home take part in achieving your goals?

The children are well aware of our family goal. So while we still buy them books, toys, games, and of course, nutritious food and supplements, we tell them to weigh things before asking for anything. By now, at age 12 and 7, they can better decide about splurging money on things. No tantrums at all, even if they see really nice toys on Youtube.

What is an empowered woman to you?

An empowered woman is able to make confident life choices without fear or trepidation because she is educated, well-informed, and supported by the people who love her.

When a woman becomes a mother, do you think it's compromising female empowerment?

I don't think it's necessarily compromising female empowerment. A lot of it really depends on the woman herself and the people around her. If she realizes her self-worth, identity, and choices, and if the system around her supports her in this realization, then she can be empowered.

Is motherhood a strength or a weakness?

I don't think it's as simple as labeling motherhood as either a strength or a weakness. Motherhood might give a woman the motivation to pursue ways to develop herself for her family's benefit, but she may also make sacrifices for the same reason. Motherhood will involve some compromises that she must navigate in her own way.

What do you love most about being a mother?

I love the relationship I have with my kids, the way that I have people to love and shower my affection to, share the things I enjoy, and discover new things to love about them.

What is your role at home?

I am an equal partner in raising our kids and in the management of our home and finances. My husband and I agree jointly on decisions affecting the family.

What is the most challenging task a mother does?

Making decisions that affect her children's future, like what school they go to, how to comfort them, and bring them back up when they are hurt.

How does your home make you feel happy?

Our home is my retreat. It is my place of comfort. Here is where I can let loose and relax at the end of a busy workday. This is also where I enjoy a lot of fun times with the family.

How important is it for you as a mother to give your family the life they should have? And what do you do to achieve that life?

What's important to me is that my children grow up being ready to face the challenges in life and still pursue what will make them happy. To do this, my husband and I nurture their abilities, encourage their curiosity, and provide a stable and comforting home environment where they can be themselves.

Do you think having your own place makes it easier for your family to achieve your goals?

Yes, having our own place is crucial to establishing the kind of home environment we want. Since we control what we put in our surroundings, and we are among those we trust, we are able to move and act more freely.

How does your home take part in achieving your goals?

Our home is where we celebrate our triumphs, take refuge in times of disappointment, and where we nurture our dreams. The home serves as a haven for us to rest in and recharge, and it's also a nesting ground for interests and abilities we want to develop.

What is an empowered woman to you?

An empowered woman is essential in bringing about a just and prosperous world.
