Undoubtedly, 2020 was tough and not a lucky year for many people for obvious reasons—a global pandemic, lockdowns, layoffs, and typhoons.

But one family from Barangay Baltan, Camarines Sur, who have suffered from recent typhoons finally saw the tables turn when they won a new house and lot from Lumina Homes and GMA Network’s Unang Hirit.

Out of 10,000 candidates who joined the UH Bagong Bahay 2021 Year 2: Pag-asa at Pagbangon Promo in partnership with Lumina Homes, Arjay Canlas Ruben, and his family were chosen as the winner of the new house and lot.

Arjay is a 29-year-old construction worker, a husband, and a father of three.

“Napaka responsable niyang tatay kasi po kahit bihira lang po ang trabaho niya, kumbaga pa-extra extra lang po siya, bilang ama, ginagawa niya po ang lahat para sa anak niya,” Alma Delos Santos, Arjay’s neighbor, told Unang Hirit in an interview.

(Arjay is a very responsible father because even if he is only working as a part-time construction worker for different projects, he is doing everything to provide for his family.)

Like many people, Arjay and his family were greatly affected by the pandemic. He lost projects because of the lockdown. It was hard for him and his family to get by because his main source of income was gone in a snap. Luckily, when things were finally opening up again and the new normal is within reach, Arjay received a few jobs like farming. This helped him get back on track and provide for his family, including a newborn baby.

However, just when things we’re going back to normal, Arjay and his family faced another challenge. Truly, 2020 is not yet done testing the Filipinos’ strength. In the latter part of the year, typhoons started hitting the Philippines, and among the most hit was Bicol Region where Arjay lives.

Self-built house

Arjay and his family are currently living in a 9-year-old house he built himself. Their house is made of bamboo and anahaw leaves as roof, and is located beside a creek.

Whenever there are storms, their house is flooded with hip-deep waters. To keep his family’s safety, they would evacuate and temporarily stay at his sibling’s house.

"Nung nalaman ko pong babagyo lumipat na po kami kasi alam kong bumabaha na dito," Arjay said in an interview.

(When I found out that there will be a typhoon, we immediately evacuated because it floods in our area.)

Their house was badly affected by Super Typhoon Rolly (Goni) that made landfall in the region of Bicol twice. Super Typhoon Rolly was the world’s most powerful tropical cyclone in 2020.

One of their walls fell down due to the flood. Arjay temporarily used plastic to cover one part of the roof.

Tables have finally turned

Like many Filipinos who have gone through a difficult time, Arjay didn’t lose hope that his life could be better after everything that has happened.

Before the new year, Unang Hirit announced that they will give away one house and lot to its lucky viewers in partnership with Lumina Homes as part of their 21st Anniversary. For the participants to qualify, they must:

Arjay joined the “Bagong Bahay Promo” in the hopes of winning to give his family a comfortable place to live in. And fortunately, out of the thousands of entries, Arjay and his family was chosen to receive the new house and lot from Lumina Homes.

And not only that, they also received various prizes like a toolkit, things for their baby, and PHP 50,000 worth of gift certificates from AllHome, a one-stop-shop for home improvement. He can use it to buy furniture and other things they need for their new home.

His wife Mary Anne said having a new home for their family is a dream come true for them.
